Jesup, Ga. Dr. Paul Elliott, 73 of Jesup, Ga. died Sunday, June 2, 2013 at Wayne Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. The Wayne County native was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church. He retired as a family physician after 35 years from Wayne Family Practice. He continued to be the medical director of both Jesup Healthcare and Altamaha Healthcare centers. A 1957 graduate of Jesup High School, he started his working days as a radio announcer and was known as "Tiger Elliott" for his soothing and easily recognizable voice. This same soothing voice carried over to provide comfort to his many patients throughout the years. He finished his post doctoral training at the Medical College of Central Georgia in Macon. From January 1974-December 1976, he served his family practice residency and was board certified by the American Board of Family Practice in 1977 and recertified in 1983, 1989, 1996 and 2002. His academic appointments and responsibilities included, Assistant Clinical Professor of the Department of Family Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia, former Wayne Memorial Hospital Chief of Staff, past chairman of the Ethics Committee and alternate director of the Georgia Academy of Family Practice and a member of the Wayne County Health Department Board of Directors. He was awarded a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and diplomat for the American Board of Family Practice. Dr. Elliott was a member of several professional societies that included, Wayne County Medical Society where he served as past president, the Eighth District Medical Society and Medical Association of Georgia. His community richly received his help as a past member of the Kiwanis Club and Masonic Lodge #112 F and AM. Although he was a very busy doctor and family man, he loved to farm his small garden, work with wood and enjoy time with his children and grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, Walker and Helen Elliott; a brother, Herod Elliott; a sister, Kathleen Elliott. Survivors are his wife, Jolene Buchan Elliott of Jesup, Ga.; two sons, Paul "Mark" Elliott, Jr. of Jesup, Ga. and Michael Alan (Dawn) Elliott of Odum, Ga.; two daughters, Miranda Boyles of Jesup, Ga. and Windy (James) Stroud of St. Simons Island, Ga.; a sister-in-law, Nang Elliott of Jesup, Ga. 5 grandchildren, Clayton Kurtz, Addie Elliott, Walker Elliott, Caroline Boyles and Bo Boyles; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11 A.M. Thursday, June 6, 2013 at Fellowship Baptist Church with Rev. David Bohannon officiating. Interment will be in the Flint Branch Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Randall Aspinwall, Dr. Kevin Keown, Dr. Bob Phillips, Jason Cooper, Ken Lightsey, Jerry Mullis, Randall Spellman. Honorary pallbearers will be the Couples Sunday School Class of Fellowship Baptist Church, Wayne Family Practice Staff, Class of 1957, Altamaha and Jesup Healthcare staffs.
