Dr. William Alexander Hitt, MD, of St. Simons Island, GA, died July 26, 2015 after an extended illness at his home, surrounded by loved ones. Dr. Hitt was born in 1934 in Augusta, GA. He is preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Williams Hitt and his father Abner Hitt, both formerly of Augusta. Dr. Hitt graduated high school at Richmond Academy Military School. After high school, he married Mary Annette Barton, his loving wife of 60 years. He went on to study pharmacy at the University of Georgia. There he completed Senior ROTC and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army Reserves. He served for 10 years, becoming a Motor Pool Officer, a Captain in the Medical Service Corps in a field hospital unit, and Detachment Commander of all enlisted persons at Fort Jackson, SC. He eventually attended Medical College of Georgia. After graduating with honors, he became a physician. His first practice was in Jesup, GA, where he lived for 11 years. There he delivered over 1,000 babies and cared for countless people in the rural town. Dr. Hitt moved his family to St. Simons in 1975. He practiced as a family physician on the island for some 30 years before retiring from his practice in 2005. He was employed with the Health Clinic at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Brunswick, GA and the Brunswick Job Corps Clinic. Dr. Hitt served his community in numerous civic, philanthropic, and professional organizations, including the Jesup Jaycees, Kiwanis, the Elks Club, and various Medical Associations. Dr. Hitt was also an active member at Christ Church Frederica on St. Simons for many years. He was an avid fan of Braves baseball, UGA football and UGA baseball. He was a very intelligent man with a quick wit and a notoriously dry sense of humor. Dr. Hitt could tell you everything there is to know about baseball and US history, especially the Civil War. His life was exemplary of a true southern gentleman, honest and upstanding. Bill Hitt will be very dearly missed by his family, friends, and his many patients who loved him throughout the years. Dr. Hitt is survived by his wife Mary Barton Hitt, and children Michael B. Hitt, Melody Hitt Allen and her husband Tommy, all of St. Simons, William A. Hitt Jr. and his wife Lisa of Brunswick, Mark Christopher Hitt and his wife Kim of Kennesaw GA, and Matthew David Hitt and his wife Lisa of Hattiesburg, MS. Grandchildren are William Alexander Hitt, III and Margaret Louise Hitt of Brunswick, Mary Frances and Susannah Adele Allen of St. Simons, Mark Christopher Hitt, Jr. and Lauren Alyssa Hitt of Kennesaw, GA, Ashley Elizabeth and Andrew David Hitt of Hattiesburg, MS and Rebecca Allen Wynn and her husband Braye, also 5 great grandchildren. Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 29 from 6-8 pm at Edo Miller & Sons in Brunswick. A funeral service will be held at Christ Church Frederica on St. Simons at 11 am on Thursday, July 30. A reception will be held in the Parish House immediately after a graveside service at Christ Church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Dr. Hitt has requested that any donations be made to your favorite charity or church. Pallbearers will be grandchildren Mark Christopher Hitt Jr., William Alexander Hitt III, and Andrew David Hitt, along with Jonathan Braye Wynn, Steven Allan Tullos, Andrew M. Clark Shacklett. Honorary Pallbearers will be William J. Wood, Joel Greene, Dr. Lana Skelton, Dr. Lawrence Crimmins, James W. Wilson, Dr. Brett Bodamer, Dr. Coleman D. Sudduth, Dr. Lanier Harrell, William Mitchell, Donald Wilson, Paul Sanders, Rev. Wright Culpepper, Rev. Bill Littleton, James Driggers, as well as all of the nurses and staff in ICU at the Southeast Georgia Health System. Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
