IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Larry Thomas
Wimpey
December 11, 1946 – August 23, 2025
Larry Thomas Wimpey, 78, passed away peacefully August 23, 2025 surrounded by his loving family and friends. Larry was born in Screven, Ga. to Clyteal C. Wimpey and Bertha Tyre Wimpey. He was a Class of 1964 graduate of Screven High School and called Screven home for most of his life with a brief absence during his time serving in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. After an honorable discharge, he returned home where he met and married Dorothy Mock, who he loved to say was his wife and best friend for 56 years. They were blessed with two children, eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren and fifth great-grandchild on the way.
Larry enjoyed his retirement after a 33- year career at Rayonier. He filled his time with service at Faith Baptist Church, where he was an active and much-loved member. He served as a Sunday School teacher, member of the Hands of Faith Bible ministry, general maintenance man, and #1 heckler of his pastor and friend, Brother Summers.
In his free time, Larry tended to his horses and cows, tuned into Fox News or his "western programs", and rode his four- wheeler around the family neighborhood, often with a grandchild or two along for the ride. These rides were accompanied by many stories of growing up with his seven siblings on the family farm. He also enjoyed riding his Honda Shadow motorcycle.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather, C.F. Hatcher, his son, Troy Wimpey, his sisters, Denny W. Mullis, Lynette H. Portain, and Marie W. Schwartz, his brother-in-law, Roger Oglesby.
Survivors are his wife, Dorothy Mock Wimpey; daughters, Kristie Wimpey Williams (Jeff Reed) of Mooresville, NC and Sabrina Bottoms Wimpey (wife of Troy) of Ailey GA; grandchildren, Alex Wimpey McGlynn (Brandon), Tyler Wimpey (Alyssa), Troy Abram Wimpey, Alayna Wimpey, Hunter Williams, Jordan Williams (Nolan Rhodes), Isabelle Williams, and Madison Williams; grand granddaughters, Charlotte, Evie, Millie Jane, and Kennedy; a brother, Shannon Wimpey (Nell); sisters, Debra Oglesby, Pasty Wilbur (Brian) and Mary Ann Flowers (Gary); brothers-in-law, Glenn Mullis and Bill Schwartz; many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 26, 2025 at O'Quinn Baptist Church in Screven with Rev. I.B. Boyette and Pastor Mark Summers officiating. Graveside service will follow in Oquinn Cemetery with Rev. Donnie Mullis officiating. Active pallbearers will be Gary Tyre (Cosmo), Ronnie Cooksey, Andy Simms, Ronnie Mullis, Casey Wimpey, Michael Patrick, Garrett Flowers, and Jeremy Patrick.
Family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 a.m. prior to services at the church.
Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
