Jim Wynn of Jesup, Ga. died Saturday, July 16, 2022. Mr. Wynn had a long and varied career which began in 1954 on the University of Georgia's student newspaper.  Then he went on to report and edit political stints as chief of the Atlanta Bureau of the Macon Telegraph and News and later, chief of the Atlanta Bureau of The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer. Jim was promoted to associate editor of the Columbus Ledger and then, to editor of the Bradenton Herald (same corporation) in Florida. He also edited two other dailies, The Marietta Daily Journal and the Meridian (MS) Star, and weeklies in Thomaston and Hinesville. The U.S. Army Veteran of Army Security Agency (1950-1953) participated in the nation's 1952 nuclear tests in the Marshall Islands. The agency monitored radio traffic from the Soviet submarines, which were spying from offshore.  To protect against security breaches, it also monitored voice radio chatter between U.S. scientists as they prepared for the test. From 1960 to 1963, Mr. Wynn served as press secretary for Lt. Governor Garland Byrd.  He returned to politics in 1992 to participate in David Poythress' successful campaign for election to state labor commissioner. During the ensuing 8 years, he worked in the labor department, and while there, created and edited the Georgia Economic Indicators and the Metro Atlanta Economic Indicators. He supervised publication of the department's Georgia Area Labor Profiles. A native of Thomaston, Mr. Wynn grew up in Canton and considered it home.  After retiring to Brunswick in 2000, he and his wife, Norma, moved in 2004 to Ashburn, which had been her hometown. Following Mrs. Wynn's death in 2008, he returned to Coastal Georgia and lived beside the Altamaha River in Wayne County. He attended Calvary Baptist Church in Jesup and was a member of it's Sunshine Seniors Sunday School Class. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Wynn, SR. and two brothers, Bob and Ken.
