James Monnie "Butch" Bishop, 69, of Brunswick, Ga. passed away suddenly on Saturday, July 31, 2021. The Wayne County native was a 1970 Wayne County High School Graduate, had lived in Brunswick the past 50 years and was a member of Bay Harbor Church of God until he changed his membership to Sterling Church of God. He began working at Fender's IGA in Jesup and then transferred to Jekyll Island, co-owning Jekyll IGA. He then owned and operated Maxwell's General Store and the Sand Pail on Jekyll Island and Coastal Alloy, Inc. in Brunswick. Butch was a past Master of Ocean Lodge No. 214, later serving as secretary for 10 years, and a member of Brunswick Lodge No. 717 F. & A.M. he was a 32 Degree Mason in the Scottish Rite, a member of Alee Shrine Temple, Savannah, and Trustee of the Brunswick Shrine Club and a Knight Templar in St. Elmo's Commandry. He also served as Worshipful Master of the 11 th Masonic District in the Grand Lodge of Georgia. His parents, Verda Jones Margraf and James Monnie Bishop, Sr. preceded him in death.
Survivors are his wife of 48 years, Dana Harrell Bishop of Brunswick; a daughter, Jessica (Stephen) McGregor and son, Joshua Bishop, both of Brunswick; 6 grandchildren, Mason, Micah, Abigail, Levi, Bailey and Aidan; 3 sisters, Janice (Michael) Morgan of Screven, Sharon (Hugh, "Buddy") Sapp of Jesup and Angela (Tony) Batten of Odum; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be 11 AM Tuesday, August 3, 2021 at Sterling Church of God, 6670 New Jesup Highway, Brunswick, GA 31523 with Pastor Larry Daughtery, Dr. John Harris and Pastor Rickey Harris officiating. Interment will follow in the Screven City Cemetery, 300 Odum Screven Road, Screven, GA 31560 with full Masonic rites. Active pallbearers will be Steve Bauman, C. J. Jefferies, Robert Phillips, Chris Osborne, Eddie Alligood and Chuck Barber. Honorary pallbearers will be the Masonic Ocean Lodge 717.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 PM Monday, August 2, 2021 at Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home, 860 Highway 301 South, Jesup, GA 31546.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shriner's Children Hospital, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
