Obituary

Mr. Gregory Donald Unger passed away on April 24, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, devotion, and deep affection for the people and animals he loved. Born on February 8, 1961, in New Orleans, he lived a life marked by steady character, quiet strength, and a generous spirit that touched everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Greg spent his life building, fixing, and helping wherever he was needed. He was a master electrician for all of his working years and later served as a building inspector for Dekalb County and the City of Covington. His career reflected the care and precision with which he approached everything he did. He took pride in doing a job well, and he earned the respect of coworkers, clients, and neighbors through his knowledge, dependability, and strong work ethic. He was the kind of man people could count on, and he carried that reputation with humility. Greg was very loyal, gave good advice, and was also a great provider.

Outside of work, Greg found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved to play golf, and he especially enjoyed the challenge and companionship that came with time on the course. He also had a deep appreciation for old cars and took great pleasure in working on them. Whether he was under the hood, restoring a familiar engine, or admiring the craftsmanship of a classic vehicle, he found satisfaction in the details and patience the work required. These interests were more than hobbies to him, as they were expressions of his personality, his curiosity, and his love of hands-on work.

Greg also had a tender heart for animals and especially loved his fur babies. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles, Jr. and Justine Unger, his nephew, Cameron Miller, and by his beloved companions Dixie, Ms. Piggy, Lucy, and most recently Molly in December 2025. His affection for animals was evident to all who knew him, and that love was returned in the comfort and companionship they gave him through the years. His home and his life were enriched by their presence, and he cherished each one deeply.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Kristy Unger, who shared his life and stood beside him through countless memories and milestones together for 36 years. He is also survived by his stepmother, Deanne Unger of Buford; his sister, Gretchen Miller and her husband Dana of Winder; his brothers, Charles Unger III and his wife Angie of Maysville, Jeff Unger and his wife Julie of Snellville, Brit Unger of Buford, Matt Unger of Dacula, and Ray Unger and his wife Elisa of Cumming. He leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews, including Jeffrey Unger, Justin Unger, Joel Unger, Brandon Unger, Cody Unger, Angela Unger, and Natalie Miller, Hannah Miller, Amy Unger, and Madison Unger, great nephew, Owen Unger, along with close family and friends who will cherish his memory always. He is also survived by his special aunt and uncle, Brenda and Ray Splawn, as well as Debbie Carlton, Robert and Roberta Strout, all of whom held a special place in his life.
