Obituary

Ellawene M. "Granny Wene" or "Shug" Griffis, 97, of Screven, Ga. passed away on Tuesday, December 2, 2025 under the care of Hospice of South Georgia.  The Appling County native had lived in Wayne County most of her life and was a member of Ritch Missionary Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, was the Sunday School secretary, member of the WMU and Sunday School Ladies Class. She was known for her delicious dishes, especially cakes. Some other hobbies she enjoyed were quilting, needlepointing and reading her Bible. Her husband, Curtis H. Griffis preceded her in death along with her parents, Willie and Alma Reddish Mann and siblings, Juanell Martin, Evelyn Holcomb, Carroll and Pete Mann.

Survivors are a daughter, Brenda Gardner of Screven; two sons, Carey (Claudia) Griffis of Savannah and Don (Linda) Griffis of Vidalia; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and a great-great grandchild; sisters, Murlene Mock, Myrt Blanton, Faye Hattaway and Deanna Cowart; a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 3 PM Thursday, December 4, 2025, at Rinehart Chapel with Reverends Mark Ledbetter and Benji McReady officiating. Interment will follow in the Ritch Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be her family. Honorary pallbearers will be, Hospice of South Georgia, Ellen Griffis, Glenda Scarborough, Jerry Griffis, Susan Nadolski and Willie Burch.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home of Jesup is in charge of arrangements.
