June 25, 1945 – June 4, 2022
Charlie Lawton Knight Jr.,76, a longtime resident of St Marys, Georgia died on Saturday, June 4 th 2022. Charlie was born in Jesup Georgia to Charlie Lawton Knight Sr. and Dorothy Johnson Knight. Charlie grew up during tough times enduring hardship along the way. He joined the United States Army at 18 years of age and after training he served in Korea. Upon completion of his enlistment, Charlie ended his time in service and was discharged honorably. He returned home and eventually settled in St. Marys, Ga. He worked at Gilman Paper Company Kraft Bag Division until it closed. He required employment status at the Gilman Paper Mill Shipping Department. The mill was sold and continued to operate under the name Durango. Charlie stayed till the mill shut down. Afterwards, Charlie retrained as a heavy equipment operator and worked in that capacity. He eventually applied for and received a position at Kings Bay Nuclear Submarine Base, where he was employed as a security officer on and off shore and he continued this position until he retired. Charlie worked hard and he was known to be a good man. Charlie was a member of the Camden Baptist Church and enjoyed hunting and fishing when he found the time. He will be missed. Barbara Knight, his wife, preceded him in death along with his parents, and a sister, Peggy Knight.
Charlie is survived by his daughter Edith (Danny) Taylor of Wichita Falls, Texas, his brother Meldrand (Pee Wee) Knight and wife Linda of Searcy Georgia; sister, Debra (John) Cooper of Bryan, Texas along with many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 10, 2022, from Jesup City Cemetery with Rev. Edward Dixon officiating.
The family will receive friends at the cemetery.
Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home of Jesup, Ga. is in charge of arrangements.
